Principiul lor de funcţionare este unul simplu: produc lumina prin încălzirea până la incandescenţa a unui filament metalic. Acesta este un simplu transistor prin care trece curent electric şi îl face să strălucească datorită temperaturii foarte mari la care ajunge.
În prezent, becurile incandesente folosesc un filament din tungsten, capabil să ajungă la temperaturi de 2000 de grade Celsius. Filamentul este închis în interiorul unui glob de sticlă vidat sau umplut cu o serie de gaze.
